Responsible Parenthood Seminar and Christmas Gift Giving in Amuyong, Alfonso, Cavite

On December 18, 2018 RIMM conducted a “Responsible Parenthood” seminar and Christmas Gift giving to 60 indigent women, the most of whom were evicted due to Twin Lake Mall development, at the Fish Gate Foundation in barangay (village) Amuyong, Alfonso, Cavite.
PP Klaus, PP Casey, Rotarian Manilito and Gina of DSWD shared their insights on Family Planning. Honorary Member Jun proudly told the participants that he underwent vasectomy and experienced no side effects at all. In fact, he is one of very few Filipino men who chose to be vasectomized. The head of the midwife of Amuyong explained all of the contraceptives including sub-dermal implant and IUD are available for free by the Philippine Government through Rural Health Unit of Alfonso.

Gina of Alfonso DSWD (Department of Social Welfare Development) conducted a group workshop to find out what contraceptives they are using and their thoughts of the disadvantages of unplanned pregnancies. Some women were not using any form of contraceptives and decided to use them during the seminar after realizing it was a serious matter for the future of their children, although their knowledge of contraceptives at that time was only pills.

RIMM donated sacks of rice, canned goods and firewood. PP Casey gave P20 bills to all the children there. Rotarian Miki assisted in the distribution of the said donation.
The indigent women and the Barangay officials of Amuyong were grateful of the meaningful event.

On January 17, 2017, CP Nito Siassat invited ASP Casey Takayama along with IPP Raymund Balicha and PE Betty Vicedo of RIMM to attend a Radio Talk Show that was sponsored by the governor Ernesto Yuyek.
RIMM shared its activities of serving the community and the poor especially its flagship program “Family Planning” to tackle the alarming national population explosion which is the root cause of poverty, hunger, joblessness and environmental destruction.

Teenage Pregnancy Forum in Alfonso National High School

Rotary International Multinational Manila (RIMM), Local Council for the Protection of Children (LCPC) under municipality of Alfonso, Cavite and Kiwanis Alfonso conducted a Teenage Pregnancy Forum at the Alfonso National High School, Cavite.

One hundred (100) students from Grade 7 to 9 actively participated in the forum. Six (6) resource speakers shared their insights during the forum. Several video presentation on Teenage Pregnancy in the Philippines caught attention of the young students.

Some of the questions asked during the open forum from the curios minds of the young students were:

1. Why is there a rise in Teenage Pregnancy?

2. Can the government help to stop the high rate of Teenage Pregnancy in the Philippines?

3. Why is it that the risk of maternal death is high in a teenage mother?

4. Why are teens still giving birth despite the high poverty in the country?

5. If a father molests his own child and the mother knows about it where can the victim get help?

6. How does a teen mother get cervical cancer?

7. What if a girl gets pregnancy by her boyfriend but her parents dislike him?

8. Does the government assist a teenage mother financially?

9. How difficult is it to be a teenage mother?

10. What are the health risks of a teenage mother?

11. Why is it that most young male teens are eager to have sex?

12. What laws do we have to protect young rape victims?

At the end of the forum the students seem to have raised their awareness and hopefully it helped preventing them from become victims of teenage pregnancy. The students said they will share the vital information they have learned in the said forum to other students in their class room session.

Associating with Marie Stopes

In addition to FriendlyCare Clinic, RIMM associated with Marie Stopes (MS), an UK based organization who provides free ligation services nation-wide in the Philippines.

– MS fund source is Marie Stopes International (HQ in UK).

– MS has 9 offices in the Philippines.

Luzon: Pasay/Pangasinan
Visayas: Cebu/Tacloban/Catbalogan
Mindanao: Davao/Uzamis/Cagayan De Oro/Iligan

– MS has free ligation schedules almost everyday in different places. 2 or more month prior scheduling is usually required.

– MS Pasay office covers Manila/Batangas/Laguna/Quezon/Cavite/Bulacan/Marinduque/Mindoro. (Metro Manila such as Malate and Pasay are not covered as some private hospitals provide ligations and conflicts with their free service.)

– Non-Philhealth holders are accepted.

– MS works with local government unit (LGU) but private organizers can be involved including indigents who are actually their main target.

– MS has total 9 doctors in the Philippines (1 doctor/office). Their Pasay office has 2 doctors and 50 nurses & midwives. They are all paid workers.

– MS provides free IUD insertions through nurses & midwives. It is scheduled separately from ligation schedules.

– Minimum 30 qualified women per time are required for ligation. Therefore about 50-60 women need to be assembled for screening considering some disqualification.

– MS also provides vasectomy and it can be mixed with ligation operations as the same doctor performs the surgery. Marie Stopes (MS) provides P300 for vasectomized person to replenish income for the day which would work as an incentive. However, only 20 – 30 vasectomies are conducted per year in the Philippines.

– MS ligation method is “mini-laparoscopy” with local anesthesia only. According to their standard, no surgical room is required so MS often uses barangay health centers to perform it. MS has all the equipments and tools for mini-laparoscopic surgery.

– MS said they have ligated women with 97kg. Blood pressure up to 150 on systolic is acceptable. Women who have done cesarean section are not qualified but IUD can be applied.

– MS supplies post surgery medication for 7 days.

RIMM looks for an active organizer who can assemble women for free ligation. RIMM can provide transportation for indigents and lunch/snack/drinks for qualified women. Please contact us for more details.

Fellowship – Joint Meeting at RIMM

Folowing the fellowship luncheon a joint meeting was held with the other Rotary clubs at the headquarters of Rotary International Multinational Manila. Joint teamwork for family planning and ligation in Manila was discussed. Highlighted was also the social problem of skyrocketing teen-age pregnancies, especially in the typhoon belt areas (where WHO reported 15,000 babies were born every month) and the need to find effective solutions to it. It is a major part of the expected 50 million population increase over the next 35 years that will most likely be uneducated and perpetually live in poverty as the country does not have the financial means to address their needs now or in the future.

Injectable Contraceptives at A Resettlement Site

Rotary Club of Multinational Manila (RIMM) has supported distribution of three month injectable contraceptives for needy women whenever such requests are made. These are the same injectables occasionally stocked by local health centers if government funds are available and purchased by women that can afford them as service costs are added. Only daily contraceptive pills are provided free at local barangay health centers when available.
In an effort to make the three month injectable contraceptives available to even indigent women RIMM is providing them at or below wholesale cost to dedicated midwives who keep records and perform the injection without added service charges. This reduces their cost to about a bottle of beer consumed per month in a local pub. Such a successful, largely self-sustaining, coordinated program was started in April in a resettlement site in Dasmarinas, Cavite where the population is accelerating at a very high rate among the very poor. The residents used to be street families in Manila moved to areas designated by the government as (still overcrowded) resettlement sites. A welfare organization called “Home for The 100th Sheep” dedicatedly provides basic preschool education and development, livelihood and other basic needs such as food and shelter. This organization coordinates with the midwives in the area and they succeeded in distributing 62 (targeting 100 by the end of June) injectables at cost. 15% of injectables are provided free of charge to the most indigent.

Ligation April 29, 2014

On April 29th the first ligation service sponsored by Multinational Manila in cooperation with local health centers was conducted for indigent women that had already given birth to between 4-7 children and desired to end their child bearing days. The minor procedure was performed free of charge by Friendly Care, an NGO in family planning service that is backed by dedicated doctors and nurses. Multinational Manila provided the transportation costs for the women to the hospital and then directly back to their homes after the procedure as well as meals and a project start-up P1,000 recovery assistance for each of the ligated women. For future ligation services the club will further focus on financially supporting the efforts of the dedicated midwives that are instrumental in supporting such family planning efforts.

Chiang Mai International Club in Thailand

Secretary and PE Casey visited Chiang Mai and joined a club meeting of Rotary Club of Chiang Mai International on April 22, 2014 in Thailand. At the meeting Casey talked about the situations of overpopulation in the Philippines, RH (Reproductive Health) bill, and the need for responsible parenthood and family planning.
