RIMM members met with the mayor Joan of Laurel and she explained that 60 percent of them are in the evacuation centers and 40 percent evacuated to their private acquaintances including their relatives or families out side of the affected zone.

Basically, Laurel evacuees are addressed to the evacuation centers in Alfonso, Tagaytay areas in Cavite. Talisay evacuees had been sheltered in Tanauan City in Batangas. Agoncillo and Lemery evacuees went to San Luis, Batangas.

Mayor Joan expressed her concern about the evacuee’s livelihood. According to her, some of the evacuees had applied jobs as nanny, massage therapists and household helpers.

In the meantime, 480 people out of 141 families from Laurel had evacuated in the gym of Splendido, Taal which usually operates as condominium/hotel & golf resort that is now shut down temporary to offer shelter as an evacuation center. Since nobody is currently in Laurel, provision of electricity has stopped. There is a small generator occasionally turned on for functions and largely cell phone charging.

Municipality of Laurel provides food supplies and basic commodity needs for the evacuees at Splendido. There are many other organizations provide and donate various items, food and entertainment to cheer them up.

Since the school education has been scheduled to be conducted at the evacuation center, RIMM provided school supplies such as notebooks and pencils to the students, as well as some toys for little boys and girls.

]]> 2020 Taal Volcano Eruption https://www.rotarymm.org/2020-taal-volcano-eruption/ Sat, 18 Jan 2020 12:58:07 +0000 https://www.rotarymm.org/?p=2120 On January 12, 2020 around 4pm, Taal volcano erupted. Barangay Sicat, Alfonso where RIMM HQ is is within 20km distance to the volcano crater.
The ashes were brought toward Manila areas due to wind direction at that time. Small seismic activities were observed frequently after the eruption. Manila airports were closed the next day long.

The electrical posts were affected by the frequent tremors along Aguinaldo Highway and power outage started the following day. Academy of World Healing Foundation (AWH) which provides its facility to RIMM as its headquarters had 5 consecutive days of blackout and all the communication lines were cut.

RIMM members who stay at AWH in this season went immediately to assist evacuees from Talisay and Laurel, Batangas province where volcanic activities were intense.

More than 6,000 evacuated to the municipality of Alfonso and RIMM coordinated with DSWD (Department of Social Welfare Development) to find the actual needs at the evacuation site mainly in its town proper where 2,000+ have been sheltered, and provide them including pales/dippers, garbage bags, hygiene kits and water.

Food has been supplied by the municipality and some private donations. There seemed to be enough supplies of drinking water, extra clothing and face masks.

As of January 16 (Day 5), they were still in need of sleeping mats, blankets and underwear for all ages and genders.
