Indigent Baby Girl with Hemangioma

As discussed at our last club meeting, on May 30 Rotarian Betty & the president Raymund brought the baby girl with hemangioma with her mother to the Chinese herbal doctor Tan’s clinic which is located in Chinatown in Metro Manila. After Dr. Tan diagnosed the baby girl he recommended her to surgically remove the lump and go back to his clinic after the operation. In the meantime Dr. Tan prescribed his Chinese capsule & tea to ease the pain of the baby.

Dr. Tan did not charge us for his consultation fee of P400 upon learning that Rotary is helping the indigent child.

We were not allowed to take photos inside his clinic nor his pharmacy. Therefore the photos were taken outside the clinic.

Originally the baby girl was found among the indigents we helped when they were still in Mangas, Alsonfo, Cavite. We brought a volunteer Japanese pediatrician to the site and she diagnosed the baby girl’s condition as hemangioma. Since hemangioma usually shrink naturally after 1.5 years of age, we decided to observe the progress.
When the baby girl turned 2 years old the lump was still as big as the size slightly larger than golf ball. Then we took her to the Alfonso Municipal Health Center, PGH (Philippine General Hospital) in Malate and even to PCH (Philippine Childrens Hospital) in Quezon City. After several diagnostic procedure, PGH was going to conduct CT scan on her but due to the Philippine’s election time and other circumstances, it has been postponed. Meanwhile, we sought for an alternative natural remedy for her which was this Chinese herbal clinic but found no other plan than surgery.

Indigent Support in Usting Continued

Since our direction of how to take care of the indigent baby girl with hemangioma in Usting, Luksuhin, Alfonso, Cavite was altered to more natural remedy with the Chinese herbal doctor in Chinatown, Manila, instead of going through PGH (Philippine General Hospital) with the modern medicine which is catered to indigents based on our discussion at our last club meeting, our club president and the incoming president visited the resettlement sites in Usting to check the status of the baby girl.

We took a van load full of fire wood provided by Academy of World Healing Foundation (AWH) for cooking duck eggs (balut) for their livelihood business. We also brought some foreign chocolates for the children.

The new plan of three children limit per couple from the new president was reminded to them.

The appointment was set with the baby girl with hemangioma with her mother for coming Monday to go to Chinatown.

A Club Meeting

On May 26, 2016 the members in the Philippines held a club meeting at one of the club member Betty’s house in barangay Sicat, Alfonso, Cavite. She is a good chef and cooked many dishes for our luncheon meeting including tuna sashimi that she hand carried from General Santos, Mindanao.

The topic included the Philippines’ president-elect Rodorigo Duterte’s plan that enforces three children limit per couple. It makes sense to our club whose flagship program is family planning and which deems overpopulation is the root cause of poverty, joblessness, food shortage, lack of education and environment of destruction. Our club has been expecting something as drastic measure as this.

The other issue discussed was about the indigent baby girl who has hemangioma on her left arm. We have been taking her to PGH for many examinations including CT scan eventually to surgically remove the lump from her arm. However, the progress has been prolonged by various circumstances. We have started to feel that some invisible force was preventing the direction. Then Betty suggested to take her to a good Chinese herbal doctor who is highly reputed. Upon confirmation of feasibility with the baby girl and her mother, we made a plan to visit China town next week. The episode will be covered in the next article.

Donation of A Solar Charger

As we learned that the residents of the squatter village in Mangas II, Alfonso, Cavite were paying 10 pesos for every cellphone charging at their neighbor house, RIMM member donated his personal solar charger device to them.
Many gathered to see the magical instrument which they likely have never seen in their life. Since some cellphones required additional adapter cables, RIMM donated P150 cash so they can buy them in the market.

Updates of Henry (who were almost dying in the beginning of the year): He shaved his hair and looked all right.
Updates of the baby girl with a lump on her arm: The little space with some tarpaulin sheet wrapped as wall is where the mother and the baby girl sleep. They are just “borrowing” the space to sleep. The skin surface of the hemangioma has scabs.
The recently delivered baby who had a little jaundice before seem to be all right now. She just has some mosquito bites.

Medical Mission – Helping Babies of Indigent Mothers

Margie Plandiano, an undernourished single mother at Gulug Mangas II, asked for assistance for her baby born in 2014 as it had a golfball-size swelling on her left arm (possible infantile venous hemangiomas). The club drove both to the Provincial Health Center where Dr. Manzo examined the baby girl. She will probably require an operation along with blood transfusion as the large swelling is increasing. Since the mother afterwards admitted not having a birth certificate for herself she was included in the batch of adults receiving birth certificates and is being provided with a certificate of indigence from DSWD. She then has to take the initiative and bring her baby to the Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo General Hospital in Trece Martirez for further check-ups. However, since there were no slots for indigents to receive Philhealth the club paid for her year’s registration (P2,400). Pediatrician Dr. Nasu from Japan visited AWH and also the site and diagnosed the swelling as possible infantile venous hemangioma which usually shrinks naturally after 1 year from birth.

Another baby who was 10 days old at that time seemed all right but Dr. Nasu diagnosed as possible hyperbilirubinemia due to an indication of slight jaundice. It is however normal for some new born babies so just further observation was advised.
