Helping Bereaved Indigent Family

The Php3,500/month family support handout for former parentless street child Nino, his under-employed grandmother Ester Stuazon and her 20-year old daughter Mhina ended in June 2015 after a 30-month support. Nino’s mother (Ester’s daughter & Mhina’s sister) was raped and murdered. Mhina, who graduated from high school two years ago has financially provided meaningful family support through part time job since our financial assistance stopped.

Ester informed us that the family was moving from their quarter in General Trias, Cavite to Binan, Laguna. Two of our club members visited them and gave financial assistance for their moving and Nino’s school supplies. Nino is 15 years old but is at 5th grade in elementary school as he was mentally disturbed and could not receive proper education in his early years. Mhina has obtained a job opportunity at a department store in Calamba, Laguna as a sales lady and is going to support the family’s livelihood.

Participating In Women’s Month Event of RC Santa Rosa Centro (D3820)

The Rotary Club of Santa Rosa Centro (SRC), District 3820, held an event as Women’s Month Cerebration including ligation service provided free by Marie Stopes.

*IPP Theodora Lucero (Doray) is a midwife and opens her own house as a lying-in clinic in barangay Ibaba, Santa Rosa, Laguna. RIMM members visited and observed the ligation activities.
*SRC was founded in 2001 and consists of 22 members who are all female.
*Presently SRC holds the event for ligation with Marie Stopes once a year only in the women’s month (March) but may conduct it more often in the future.
*SRC started this event with Marie Stopes in March 2014 and it was their 2nd time. Their target was indigents and SRC members spent 3 days visiting 18 barangays in Santa Rosa to announce the event.
*The ‘everything free’ event included pap smear tests and prenatal check-ups by IPP’s friends and volunteer doctors (performed in addition to ligation and vasectomy conducted by Marie Stopes).
*Anti-biotic and pain relief medication were donated by the mayor of Santa Rosa who is female and also the current president of SRC.

Teenage Pregnancy Seminar at Balibago National Highschool

A two hour (1-3pm) focused presentation on teenage pregnancy was given at Balibago National High School in Laguna to 120-130 students, over 75% of which were girls between the ages of 12-14. Teenage mother Ronalyn Thanre from the Mangas II sqatter camp in Alfonso, Cavite, holding her 8-month old son, was the main speaker (supported by 13-year old Kessy, also from Mangas). Starting with an emotional talk as to her background and sufferings as a destitute teenage mother and with RIMM (Rotary International Multinational Manila) member and teacher Mondejar as moderator, she settled down and answered student questions for over one hour. IPP (Immediate Past President) Klaus followed with an overview of the rapid increase in population in relation to the availability and price of rice, the most basic commodity for survival.
RIMM treated The Mangas teenage speakers to lunch, provided a honorarium to them and also provided additional rice support. Funded by RIMM and prepared on-site, merienda was served to all students at three o’clock.
