Subdermal Implant Support

On April 11, 2018 a Progestin Subdermal Implant (PSI) activity at no cost for women in Alfonso was spearheaded by Friendly Care Foundation (FC), Alfonso Municipal Health Center and our club. FC arrived from Manila to perform the implant. FC provided all of the necessary materials to conduct the implant. Dr. Manzo, chief of Alfonso municipal health center, had enlisted 100 women for the implant. The seminar room of Alfonso health center provided the venue of the implant. FC relayed general information about the implant and answered queries before pre-screening the assembled women.

RIMM gave P200 cash each to the 100 enlisted women to buy food. Pre-screening by FC excluded 15 women due to the following reasons: (1.) had engaged in sex 3 days prior to the pre-screening, (2.) positive test result of pregnancy, (3.) still in the middle of injectable contraception.

The majority of the women were grateful to avail of the implant. The insertion of the bendable match-stick like implant under the skin of the upper arm was painless and it allegedly prevents pregnancy for 3 years. Some young teen below 17 also received the implant.

PE Raymund manged to get 4 indigent women from Usting in Luksuhin to avail of the free implant and Honorary Member Carlito managed the crowd control of the event.

Hygiene Products Distribution in Usting

On March 20, 2018, RIMM members accompanied friends of PP Don Shields of Rotary Club of Geelong Central District 9780 Australia namely Kathie and Anthony to distribute hygiene products that they brought with them from Australia at Usting, Luksuhin in Alfonso,

Indigent women and their children were pleased to receive the hygiene products.

In the meantime, Since family planning is the flagship program of RIMM we reminded the women and young teenage mothers in Usting to voluntarily undergo free subcutaneous implant on April 11, 2018 to be conducted by RIMM, Friendly Care and Dr. Manzo (Municipal Health Officer of Alfonso). RIMM has offered cash incentive to Usting resident Roselyn who underwent tubal ligation to invite more women in her community for subcutaneous implant on April 11, 2018.

On January 17, 2017, CP Nito Siassat invited ASP Casey Takayama along with IPP Raymund Balicha and PE Betty Vicedo of RIMM to attend a Radio Talk Show that was sponsored by the governor Ernesto Yuyek.
RIMM shared its activities of serving the community and the poor especially its flagship program “Family Planning” to tackle the alarming national population explosion which is the root cause of poverty, hunger, joblessness and environmental destruction.

Teenage Pregnancy Forum in Alfonso National High School

Rotary International Multinational Manila (RIMM), Local Council for the Protection of Children (LCPC) under municipality of Alfonso, Cavite and Kiwanis Alfonso conducted a Teenage Pregnancy Forum at the Alfonso National High School, Cavite.

One hundred (100) students from Grade 7 to 9 actively participated in the forum. Six (6) resource speakers shared their insights during the forum. Several video presentation on Teenage Pregnancy in the Philippines caught attention of the young students.

Some of the questions asked during the open forum from the curios minds of the young students were:

1. Why is there a rise in Teenage Pregnancy?

2. Can the government help to stop the high rate of Teenage Pregnancy in the Philippines?

3. Why is it that the risk of maternal death is high in a teenage mother?

4. Why are teens still giving birth despite the high poverty in the country?

5. If a father molests his own child and the mother knows about it where can the victim get help?

6. How does a teen mother get cervical cancer?

7. What if a girl gets pregnancy by her boyfriend but her parents dislike him?

8. Does the government assist a teenage mother financially?

9. How difficult is it to be a teenage mother?

10. What are the health risks of a teenage mother?

11. Why is it that most young male teens are eager to have sex?

12. What laws do we have to protect young rape victims?

At the end of the forum the students seem to have raised their awareness and hopefully it helped preventing them from become victims of teenage pregnancy. The students said they will share the vital information they have learned in the said forum to other students in their class room session.

Teenage Pregnancy Seminar at Luksuhin National High School

On August 19, 2016 our club (RIMM: Rotary International Multi-national Manila) conducted a Teenage Pregnancy Forum at the Lucsuhin National High School, Alfonso, Cavite, Philippines. Resource speakers of The Local Council for the Protection of Children (LCPC), Kiwanis and Values Formation and Spiritual Transformation Council, Inc. (VFSTCI) shared their insights to the students and Health teachers. More than 50 teenage students from Grades 7 to 9 participated in the forum.

Resource speakers in the forum were:

1. Past President Raymund Balicha of RIMM

2. Betty Vicedo of RIMM

3. Gina Vedan of LCPC

4. Anacoleta Alcazar of LCPC

5. Pastor Nestor Sindac of VFSTCI

6. Anna Liza of Kiwanis

A series of documentary video presentation were shown where the students reacted to the reality of a young teenage Filipina mother experiencing a painful birth and facing the reality of financial difficulties and all other disadvantages of being a teenage mother.

In the open forum the Resource Speakers answered the questions of the student enumerated below :

1. Why is it that we find it difficult to open up to our parents about our problems?

2. How do we still prevent pregnancy during sex?

3. How do i know if a man has an intention to have sex with me when we are together?

4. Why are there teenagers who get pregnant and cannot wait for the right time in their life?

5. What are the signs that a girl is pregnant?

6. Why are there young teens who have sex even if they know the risk of it?

7. There is an increase in teenage pregnancies ages 12-19 who also commit abortion. Have you encountered any teenage mother who committed abortion?

8. How can a relationship be accepted by our parents?

9. Why are teenagers in heat in having sex?

10. Is it safe to have sex during menstruation?

11. What the signs that are girl is not virgin?

12. What is Cervical Cancer?

Lucsuhin National High School Principal Perlita Villanueva was grateful to RIMM for conducting a Teenage Pregnancy Forum at their school since their rate of teenage pregnancy is alarmingly increasing. The Health teachers and the students who participated in the forum will share what they have learned to all of the other students during their Health subject. After the well-participated forum RIMM shouldered the snacks of all the participants.

The next Teenage Pregnancy Forum will be at the Alfonso National High School. I will announce the date upon confirmation from the school.

UP Student Visitors

Three students of University of the Philippines who were staying at our club member Betty Vicedo’s house for field study visited RIMM (Rotary International Multinational Manila) headquarters. The students wished to know more about our club activities and we explained about our flagship program of family planning and responsible parenthood. The students seemed to have realized that overpopulation is the source of all the problems including joblessness, poverty, hunger and environmental destruction. Many rice fields have been converted to residential subdivision and Philippines will have to rely on other countries for their dietary staple.

Since our club member and a Japanese neurosurgeon Dr. Miki Kanaji attended as well, the other topics included widely spreading tuberculosis, which may soon break out to be a major national health concern.

Fellowship – Joint Meeting at RIMM

Folowing the fellowship luncheon a joint meeting was held with the other Rotary clubs at the headquarters of Rotary International Multinational Manila. Joint teamwork for family planning and ligation in Manila was discussed. Highlighted was also the social problem of skyrocketing teen-age pregnancies, especially in the typhoon belt areas (where WHO reported 15,000 babies were born every month) and the need to find effective solutions to it. It is a major part of the expected 50 million population increase over the next 35 years that will most likely be uneducated and perpetually live in poverty as the country does not have the financial means to address their needs now or in the future.

Birth Certificate Project

Many of the new residents of Gulud, barangay Mangas squatter village, consisting presently of about 47 families, migrated from Western Samar to Manila and also Bacoor about 10 years ago. Children born during these wanderings, along with some of the adults, largely have no birth certificates, which are usually required to apply for Philhealth (national health insurance).
Multinational Manila members had meetings with the indigents and a young leader stepped forward to put together a written survey (name, date of birth, where born, mother, father, etc. of everyone not having a birth certificate).

AWH staff/Rotarians Casey and Raymund and a guest from Japan visited Gulud together with Gina of Alfonso DSWD, Dr. Manzo of Alfonso Municipal Health Center, and Tess of National Statistic Office (NSO), Barangay Mangas captain and a pastor of Born Again Christian and discussed about the procedure to apply for birth certificates of about 60 indigents.

The NSO official stated that the requirements of delayed registration for birth certificates are as follows:
– NSO Negative Certification (certification of no birth certificate) P140/persons
– Baptismal
– Medical (immunization) Records
– School Records (Form 137)
– Barangay Certification
– Certificate of Indigence

(name of child, date and place of birth, name of parents)
– Voters Registration Certification
– Marriage Contract of Applicant
– Marriage Contract of Parents
– SSS Records
– Cenomar of Parents

AWH delivered an additional van load of bundled firewood and pledged to assist NSO with payment for the negative certification with club Rotarians acting in the dual capacity of assisting with the process as needed.

Local pastors volunteered to provide birth certificates for the Brgy. Mangas II indigents for free.

As part of NSO requirements, nine children ages 0-59 months that had not yet resided at the squatter village during the September 2014 mass immunization were immunized.
