Letter of appreciation from Mayor Varias and Dr. Manzo of the Alfonso Municipal Health Office for RIMM’s continuing support in assisting to boost the resistance and improve the health of tuberculosis patients with the goal of eradicating the disease in the area by 2030.

Midyear Review 2017

All Star President (ASP) Midyear Review was held on January 21-22, 2017 in Clark, Panpanga, Philippines. Since ASP Casey needed to attend the guests from Japan for Rotary’s fundraising and membership recruitment during the period, PP Klaus attended the midyear review on behalf of him.

At midyear review, PP Klaus shared our club’s projects, such as family planning, teenage pregnancy forums, End TB program, and post typhoon Haiyan victimized area research and support trip. Since the venue was close to where indigenous tribe Aetas live, honorary Rotarian Jun and PP Klaus extended their support to them as it is one of our service projects.

In the meantime, ASP Casey succeeded in inviting 10 more new members to RIMM and funding with sales of district raffle tickets.

On January 17, 2017, CP Nito Siassat invited ASP Casey Takayama along with IPP Raymund Balicha and PE Betty Vicedo of RIMM to attend a Radio Talk Show that was sponsored by the governor Ernesto Yuyek.
RIMM shared its activities of serving the community and the poor especially its flagship program “Family Planning” to tackle the alarming national population explosion which is the root cause of poverty, hunger, joblessness and environmental destruction.

UP Student Visitors

Three students of University of the Philippines who were staying at our club member Betty Vicedo’s house for field study visited RIMM (Rotary International Multinational Manila) headquarters. The students wished to know more about our club activities and we explained about our flagship program of family planning and responsible parenthood. The students seemed to have realized that overpopulation is the source of all the problems including joblessness, poverty, hunger and environmental destruction. Many rice fields have been converted to residential subdivision and Philippines will have to rely on other countries for their dietary staple.

Since our club member and a Japanese neurosurgeon Dr. Miki Kanaji attended as well, the other topics included widely spreading tuberculosis, which may soon break out to be a major national health concern.

District Governor Obet Visit

On January 20, 2016, the DG Obet, DGE Rudy and the other district officials visited RIMM (Rotary International Multinational Manila) headquarters in Alfonso, Cavite. All the RIMM club members including Henry Komorita from United States, Dr. Miki Kanaji from Japan, Ivan Indrisi originally from Holland and Imelda Domingo from Olongapo attended the meeting. Various topics were reported and discussed including RIMM’s flagship program of family planning, teenage pregnancy, Helping Aetas tribes, road safety, indigent support, coordination for volunteer Japanese doctors and nurses at National emergency and health concerns on tuberculosis.
Lunch was served at a cafeteria together with the overseas guests of AWH (Academy of World Healing Foundation) that provides its venue to RIMM.

Joint Meeting with Rotary Club of Makati Buendia (District 3830)

After attending the Alfonso Women’s Month Celebration an impromptu joint meeting was held at RIMM headquarters attended by Cavite provincial councilor Irene who also is the current president of Rotary Club of Makati Benita (District 3830) and Alfonso Municipal councilor Carol who also is our club’s honorary Rotarian.

Irene suggested further organizing and disciplining the residents of the squatter camp in barangay Gulod, Mangas II in Alfonso, Cavite, taking turns family by family to clean and sanitize the area which was started by RIMM. She said she would bring the issue to the provincial council and study what they can do, hopefully to donate (additional) separate toilets for men and women at least. A separate toilet for men and women was already donated with the help of the local Girl Scout club with the squatter camp men digging the required two holes but the situation is still inadequate for the more than 25 families using them.

In addition to discussing the conditions of the “Samar” squatter camp which have become somewhat more deplorable with the influx of more and more families many other topics were discussed such as family planning, organic farming, and self-sustainability in community service. Irene said that she would invite RIMM to join IMPACT (Innovations and Multi-Sectorial Partnerships to Achieve Control of TB). She has the same visions as RIMM that TB is still underestimated in this country and needs to be eradicated as TB spreads through the air while Rotary’s flagship project polio does not and has earned enough attention and support by now.

RIMM BCP Casey and PE Raymund delivered a van load of bundled firewood. Municipal councilor Carol (Honorary RIMM club Rotarian Carol) had invited Cavite provincial councilor Irene (Pres. of Rotary Club of Makati Buendia in District 3830) to come along and inspect the site to provide her input on achieving long-term solutions.

Medical Mission – Saving the life of an indigent boy

A post-Christmas support giving project turned into a life-and-death struggle. Academy of World Healing Foundation (AWH) and club members brought the almost terminally ill 18-yr old boy Henry, weighing 27 kilos (dying of malnutrition, lung infection, parasite invasion, cannot eat nor drink and totally dehydrated) along with his mother to Dr. Manzo’s Alfonso Health Center for initial check-up and the Alfonso hospital for x-rays, blood tests etc. (one lung non-functional due to infection). Mother admits not having birth certificates for either her son nor herself and emergency Phil Health assistance is not feasible. Henry, as indigent, is nevertheless transported on orders of Dr. Manzo by ambulance, along with a club member and rep. from DSWD, to a public hospital in Trece Martirez, then going on to Manila after admittance failed.
After two days the dying boy, not gaining admittance in any hospital, came back by public transportation to the barangay to die. Dr. Manzo suggests that the only way to save the boy, along with the medication provided to fight the infection, is to get his resistance up by providing high energy food such as ENSURE. Club members immediately purchased high energy food and also continued to support the mother (father died; 17-year old daughter has 8-month old baby and boyfriend ran away) until the boy would hopefully regain his strength to be dewormed and the mother can go back to work as a street Penoy/Balot egg vendor along Aguinaldo Highway. Henry was subsequently diagnosed with TB and the club supplied food and other incidentals inclusive of charcoal throughout the month to Henry and his mother as she had to stay home to nurse the boy back to health. Additionally, indigent families were provided bundled firewood throughout the month. Children were also provided with baked goods, sweets, clothing.
